Development news

Hi everyone!

Here is a quick info on the recent development:

Subversion move

For all those who are getting the Kdenlive source through subversion, we just moved the development to /trunk. If you have a copy of the KDE4 branch, go into it and do:
svn switch https://kdenlive.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/kdenlive/trunk/kdenlive

New features

Some of the features that are implemented in the development version and will be part of the next Kdenlive 0.7.3 release:

  • Rendering scripts: You can now create rendering scripts that will allow you to launch the rendering whenever you want by just starting a bash script (image 1)
  • Web updates: We are implementing content update through the web. That means you will be able to download new rendering profiles from within Kdenlive, and sharing will be made easier, more info on that later (image 2)

Kdenlive 0.7.2 released

We are glad to announce the release of Kdenlive 0.7.2. This release focuses mostly on stability and usability issues. Several bugs were found in previous Kdenlive versions that could corrupt your project files, so we strongly encourage all users to upgrade to the 0.7.2 version.

Update (2nd February 09)
A bug was just discovered in Kdenlive 0.7.2 that caused a freeze when starting the Config Wizard using MLT

New features:

  • Dvd Wizard
Lets you create a simple dvd iso image in a few mouse clicks
  • Job tracking
All running rendering jobs can now be monitored from the Kdenlive rendering window.
  • Rendering

Kdenlive 0.7.1 released

We are glad to announce the release of Kdenlive 0.7.1. Lots of improvements were made since the 0.7 release. The main changes include:

Kdenlive 0.7 released

We are glad to announce the immediate release of Kdenlive 0.7

This is the first release of Kdenlive for KDE 4. Here is a quick list of improvements over the previous KDE 3 version:

  • Complete rewrite of the communication with the MLT video framework, which means a huge speedup in all timeline operations
  • Capture from different sources: DV, HDV, webcam and screen grab
  • Better KDE integration (notifications, job progress, Nepomuk annotations)
  • More effects and transitons (improved support for Freior)
  • Full undo support with history
  • Video rendering is now completely independant from main application, you can safely work while rendering
  • Initial support for Jog Shuttle devices

Fixing the last bugs in 0.7

We are getting close to the Kdenlive 0.7 release. Many issues were recently fixed in Kdenlive and some others in MLT. We still have some pending bugs to fix for the 0.7 release, but hope to be able to release in something like ten days.

You can follow the progress on our roadmap page. Some of the minor bugs will probably be postponed to Kdenlive 0.7.1 so that we can do the release in the first week of November.

Kdenlive 0.7beta1 released

After 10 months of work, we are proud to announce the release of the first beta version of Kdenlive for KDE4.

Kdenlive is an open source multi track video editor based on the MLT video framework and FFmpeg.

Main Features:
* Capture video from your camcorder, webcam or screen
* Mix a large number of different formats (depending on your FFmpeg install): mpeg, flash, mp3, ogg, png, jpeg, dv, hdv, ...
* See the result of your work (effects and transitions) in realtime
* Export your work in several formats (hdv, dv, mpeg, ...)
* Create titles, slideshows and more

You can download the 0.7beta1 source package from our sourceforge project page. Kdenlive relies on several libraries, so you will need some experience to compile from source. If you want to try it, go to our compilation page.

New web site

As you can see, we just updated the Kdenlive web site. Our goal is to have a collaborative web site which allows users to put content on it and helps finding useful information. We also hope that it will bring other people into the project, because help is always welcome!

Several features are planned for this web site:

* Better integration of the forum
* Improve online collaborative documentation
* Allow users to upload tutorials

Kdenlive 0.7 beta coming soon

The Kdenlive 0.7 beta release should be ready around the 6th of october. This will be the first release of Kdenlive available for KDE4.

The proposed roadmap is:

Friday 3rd of October: string freeze

Monday 6th of October: release of Kdenlive 0.7 beta1

If no major issue is detected, the final Kdenlive 0.7 release should be ready by the 25th of October.

KDE4 porting progress, no time for KDE3 version....

The KDE4 version is progressing nicely, and several improvements were made to the MLT video framework which should make the next release very attractive. Sadly, I don't have enough time to work on the KDE3 version, so no progress was made on that side.

I know it is frustrating that no release was made for a long time, but the port to KDE4 was almost a complete rewrite, and the KDE3 version, which was not originally written for MLT was too complex to maintain.

Here you can see a screenshot of current development version. What still needs to be done is some work on transitions and better loading/saving, then we will be ready for a beta release.

KDE4 porting progress

Development is going on for the KDE4 version, see attached screenshot. A lot of work has still to be done, I hope to be able to release a fisrt KDE4 version in 2 months.
Meanwhile the current KDE3 development version should hopefully be released as Kdenlive 0.6 in march...
